One of the shootings was blamed on Hamas, the group leading the government of the Palestinian Authority. Such violence has hindered the relationship between Hamas and the security forces, dominated by the rival Fatah movement of President Mahmoud Abbas. The major in the Preventive Security Service was seriously wounded in a shooting attack on his car near Gaza City's Shati refugee camp. He later died from his injuries. Earlier on Thursday, thousands of Palestinian police officers, demanding their monthly salaries, fired in the air and smashed windows outside Gaza's parliament building. Participants also called on Hamas to disband a private militia it recently deployed in Gaza's streets. Since taking office in March, Hamas has come under increasing pressure from ordinary Palestinians. The Palestinian government has been unable to pay the salaries of some 165-thousand civil servants because of crushing international sanctions. The demonstration and the shootings came as Hamas debated whether to accept the idea of a Palestinian state next to Israel, including implicit recognition of the Jewish state, or face a national referendum. Abbas has given Hamas until the middle of next week to make up its mind. The Palestinian President is due to travel to Gaza on Friday for several days of talks with Hamas leaders.
