Winter hiking to Upper Kananaskis Falls is a magical experience! The frozen waterfalls and snow-covered trails create a serene and picturesque atmosphere. It's a moderate hike, so make sure to wear proper winter gear, including spikes or crampons for icy sections. The trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is perfect for those seeking a peaceful adventure in the Canadian Rockies. Canadian Rockies Hike. January 10/2023 Winter Hike, Alberta Canada Today I am at the Upper Kananaskis Lake and I will be hiking to the Upper Kananaskis Falls. This hike had some of the most beautiful winter landscapes I have every seen. The trail is 9.3 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 275 meters. The trailhead is located between the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes. Today we will be hiking along the North side of Upper Kananaskis Lake to the back of the lake to see Upper Kananaskis Falls. Starting out the trail was well packed which was nice. At .6k I took a little trail down to get a view of the lake. So glad I did as the view was stunning. Once back on the main trail you can expect some up and down along the way. At 1.3k the trail splits and you want to take the trail on the left. As you continue the Upper Kananaskis Lake will be on your left the whole time, and in spots you will get some great views. As you get close to the back of the lake the trail will take you into the trees and up a steep section. At 2.9k you will have reached the boulder field. Here you get a great view in all directions. The trail is now not as packed so you have to be very mindful of where you are walking, so you don’t twist an ankle. As you cross the boulder field the mountain views were stunning. Soon you will find yourself meandering through the trees with pillows of snow all around you. Now the trail starts to make its way to the back of the lake. At 4.4k you will arrive at the turnoff to the Point Backcountry Campground. I took a right here to continue to the falls. Now the trail once again heads into the trees. The trail is not a lot narrower with a lot of post holes in it. At 5.1k take the trail to the left to get down to Upper Kananaskis Falls. At 5.2k you will have made it to the falls. There is a bench here to sit on. The falls are not that big, but they were nice. They appeared to be fully frozen. After a quick lunch and a beer, it was time to head back. On the way back there was a little more sun so this made the views even better. For me this hike was all about the journey and not just the destination. Once I got to the boulder field the views in all directions were just crazy. If you want to do a great winter hike around 10k in total I highly recommend this one. There is a lot of up and down on the trail. You do have to be careful hiking through the boulder field and to the falls as the trail is not as well packed. This is my 96th video.
