GROW is a large-scale luminous dreamscape by Studio Roosegaarde, created by Daan Roosegaarde, celebrating the beauty and future of agriculture through light, science, and landscape. Presented as a 20,000 square meter field of red and blue waves of light, GROW transforms farmland into a living cultural artwork. The project is inspired by scientific light recipes from photobiology, which demonstrate that specific combinations of blue, red, and ultraviolet light can improve plant growth, increase resilience, and significantly reduce the need for pesticides. The result is a poetic visualization of how innovation can support more sustainable food systems. GROW is realized as a vertical light design sweeping across a field of leek (Allium porrum), experienced as “dancing lights” moving across the agricultural landscape. While rooted in scientific research, the work communicates through emotion and scale, inviting audiences to reconsider the vast fields that feed the world and the role of farmers as stewards of the future. The film documents the development of this luminous landscape and reflects on light as both a functional and symbolic force. GROW reframes agriculture as agri-culture, positioning farmland as a space of knowledge, care, and cultural value. As Daan Roosegaarde describes it, GROW is not a utopia but a protopia, improving step by step. GROW was developed over two years as part of the artist-in-residence program of Rabobank. The project was informed by expert collaborations with Wageningen University & Research, Springtij Forum, and the World Economic Forum in Davos. It is the first in a series of dreamscapes by Studio Roosegaarde exploring the intersection of art and science in shaping a better world.
