St George's Bay, St Julians, MALTA While technically part of St. Julian’s, St. George’s Bay is a distinct district in its own right. The bay lies right next to Paceville, Malta’s centre of nightlife, and looks out towards the northeast and the point of Dragonara to the right. The peninsula that ends at the point of Dragonara was the site on which the Dragonara Palace was built in 1830, right on the rocky coast commanding spectacular views over the deep Mediterranean waters. The Palace was changed into Malta’s first casino in 1964 and remains an upmarket attraction in the area. St Georges bay is one of the most attractive sandy beaches in Malta. Located in the heart of the entertainment mecca known as Paceville, it is the location where many tourists and students like to take a dip into our clean Maltese waters. The beach is popular both during the day and up to early hours. When it is good weather youths, especially foreign students, like to laze on the sand enjoying the beautiful weather of our islands. They socialise with many other youths coming from different countries to study English. You can integrate by going for a long walk starting from this beach up to Sliema, Gzira and Ta’ Xbiex. A walk of at least seven kilometres. In fact, there are some very good areas for swimming. Many restaurants, cafes and ice cream parlours lie along the promenade and it spoil you for choice, where one would either like to eat or have a light snack or even an ice-cream or coffee. St Georges bay is an enjoyable sandy beach in the centre of the entertainment area. It is a location within St. Julian’s where a large percentage of hotels, restaurants, nightlife and various English-language schools are located. At the inner end of St. George’s Bay lies a sandy beach that has become a preferred swimming and sunbathing spot among holidaymakers since the start of improvements that have been made to the bay since 2004. The beach has now been classified as a blue flag beach, an international mark of high environmental and safety standards. Its proximity to numerous luxury hotels and resorts in addition to the neighbouring towns of St. Julian’s and Sliema makes it a firm favourite among beaches on Malta’s eastern coast. And, while sunbathing and swimming are also an appropriate way to enjoy the Maltese sunshine, the water sports facilities and scuba diving centres along St. George’s Bay ensure a fun day at the seaside for all. Just a step away from the beach is Baystreet, one of Malta’s main shopping and entertainment centres. The complex comprises a wide array of shops, gelaterias and restaurants serving many kinds of international cuisine. There are also a couple of bars that turn into clubs late into the night. For those visiting the bay by car, the shopping centre also has a well-priced car park which saves one the hassle of having to search high and low for a parking place in this well-frequented part of Malta. Further up the road from the beach and the shopping centre is Malta’s largest cinema complex, the Eden Cinema, and a bowling alley. Being centrally located right next to hotels, restaurants and other sources of entertainment in Paceville, this part of Malta is a sure place for a fun night out.
