Parsifal (1882), Richard Wagner's enigmatic final opera, was intended for performance only at the specially designed Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, Germany. Made to commemorate its centenary, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg's Parsifal (1982, clip) is a paradoxical film. A triumph of stereo sound recording that uses all the resources of studio shooting and technology, it is a grand attempt at spiritual reunification with the fractured past. Syberberg attempts to fuse the approaches of Wagner and Bertolt Brecht, while reinventing the staging and lighting strategies made famous by German Expressionism. Acknowledging the historical fissure separating the 1980s from the silent era, Syberberg's Parsifal is a Grail quest linked to the structure of cinema itself. Parsifal is the first film available in our comprehensive retrospective "A Dream, What Else?" Syberberg’s other major films will be added weekly in January, concluding with the release of his first feature in decades, Demmin Cantos (2024). In addition to our four-part portrait film, our Syberberg Exhibition includes detailed analyses, a previously unreleased film about the making of Parsifal by fellow New German Cinema pioneer Alexander Kluge (clip 2, • 2/2 In the Parsifal Studio (Alexander... ), and a plethora of archival materials. The sets and props developed by Austrian painter Hanns Kunitzberger in collaboration with Syberberg demonstrate both the creative process of making the film and the film's many debts to German Expressionist films like Siegfried (Fritz Lang, 1924, • Space, Set Design, Rhythm, and Dream ... ) and German Romantic painting.
