MULLA - black metal band from Kazakhstan. MULLA is, first and foremost, a creative project, founded in 2019 by musicians Shahram and Shukri. Its members emphasize that they are not practicing Muslims. Their goal is neither preaching nor criticizing, but rather creating a unique cultural hybrid, a simulacrum with its own powerful poetics. This is a conceptual journey through mythologized landscapes, where images of Islamic culture (calligraphy, philosophical motifs, linguistics) become the colors of a black metal painting. The lyrics, written in Kazakh, are a bridge between worlds. This is a conscious choice: to speak the language of their land, but to frame their thoughts in Arabic script, alien to many listeners and therefore even more mystical and detached. This visual code previously misled audiences, fueling rumors of the band's Iraqi origins. For Mulla, it's proof of the success of their artistic endeavor. Arabic graphics here aren't a symbol of faith, but a costume element, a decorative element that enhances the atmosphere of mystery and cultural alienation of their sound, a fusion of chilling, melodic black metal with ornamental folk chants and a thick, almost ritualistic atmospheric layer. The music serves as a guide into a conjured imaginary world, where aesthetics becomes a new religion, and the stage its temple. Mulla don't engage in propaganda. They are architects of perception. Their creation is a radical experiment in the appropriation, reinterpretation, and packaging of cultural codes within the rigid framework of extreme music. To date, the band has released five full-length albums and several singles. In 2025, the musicians re-recorded their second and third albums with a more professional sound, and their release is planned for 2026, including on Satanath Records. The band stands out thanks to its unusual subject matter, offering listeners a frightening glimpse into the Middle East, complete with all the modern rumours and stereotypes. It's worth noting that on February 13, the project performed its first concert in Kazakhstan at Satanath Records Almaty Fest 2026.
