Africa once had a leader who refused to beg. In 1983, Thomas Sankara took power in Burkina Faso—not with promises of wealth, but with a vision of dignity. He rejected foreign aid that came with chains, challenged the IMF and World Bank, empowered women as a pillar of national development, and demanded that Africans consume what they produce. Sankara renamed the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso — “The Land of Upright People.” Under his leadership, millions were vaccinated, land was redistributed to farmers, corruption was punished, and government officials lived like the people they served. But his ideas were dangerous to imperial interests. In 1987, Sankara was assassinated. Yet his spirit lives on—in Africa’s youth, in movements for economic sovereignty, and in the growing demand for African-led solutions. This is not just history. This is a reminder of what African leadership can look like.
