Sankara renamed the country from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso — “The Land of Upright People.” Under his leadership, millions were vaccinated, land was redistributed to farmers, corruption was punished, and government officials lived like the people they served. But his ideas were dangerous to imperial interests. In 1987, Sankara was assassinated.
