Gary Keith Johnson, II (The Lohden Boys, Louisville/Nashville studio independent drummer, Producer) gives Drumming News Network and update on some of Canopus Drums offerings for 2023. Birch Series: The direct, powerful sound for today’s music CANOPUS’ presentation of our ideal sound in the R.F.M. series was enthusiastically supported by many drummers. However, historically speaking, a musical instrument has to change in order to adapt to new playing methods, new genres and trends of a new age. A musical instrument is always destined to face new demands, even if the manufacturer makes their masterpiece with confidence. CANOPUS understands this challenge. Hard rock and funk drummers want a fast, fundamental, projecting tone and this became a key focus for our next development. In order to achieve this sound, we decided to use shells without reinforcement. After trying many materials, our research concluded that birch worked best for rock. Extensive trial and error went into determining the ply and edge angle on the drum shells. The result is a drum with startling sound character that will reinvent the image of the birch shell. Our birch series has a weathered and rich sound, because of less dense birch and a slightly weaker molding pressure. All of these findings were discovered unexpectedly and worked out quite well for us. Our birch series has a powerful, sustaining low end with a fast release and excellent sound projection. It is the embodiment of the sound we envisioned for the birch series. Our birch drums are now used by many drummers live, in the studio, or wherever this powerful tone is needed. Bro’s Series: Adopting an all-Birch shell, you can experience the well-balanced tom and floor tom, with excellent sound and low end of the 20” bass drum which is comparable to 22” set. It can be used for school equipment such as club activities for a long time, making it a recommended size balance. The Re-released Black Nickel Brass II with 1.5mm thickness: The 1.5mm-thick brass shell gives a much more solid sound than its appearance may suggest – providing the perfect blend of rich depth, balanced mid-low frequencies and great projection. Its sound far exceeds expectations for this type of snare – and meets all the demands of today’s music scene. It comes standard with a baseball bat-type, 3-position inner muffler for enhanced playability and a variety of personalized sounds. I’ve been in several signed bands. Toured all over the planet with various artists. I had a huge drum collection at one time and liquidated the whole thing except for my Canopus Drums. Got a chance to be an endorser and product representative and it’s been all Canopus ever since. I’m currently living in Louisville, Kentucky even though I grew up in The Detroit music scene. I perform live in my band The Lohden Boys and do recording session work between Louisville and Nashville Tennessee.
