Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes to prep the ink review posts we put up each week? We've had some questions...so, we thought we'd give you a peek. Each week Pen Chalet features a fountain pen ink for an ink review. We put it through several standard ink review tests (1 Tip Test, Dry Test, Water Test, etc.) and then readers can enter to win the bottle of fountain pen ink we used for the ink review once the review is posted. But what goes on between the time when the fountain pen ink is tested, and when we post the review? 1. We adjust the video and lighting equipment setup so we can get images and video of the featured ink and some ink splats. We run video while we continue with the prep. 2. We unbox the ink. 3. We pull out our "inky" box used regularly for controlling ink splatter when we're playing with out inks. Our inky box is literally a medium sized shipping box with the bottom taped shut, the top pieces removed, and a couple "handles" cut into the sides with a xacto knife (because we're fancy like that). 4. Having an inky box you reuse each week is part of the fun since you can see a history of ink fun right there as the ink messes layer over each other week by week. 5. We place the inky box on the table, and pull out our Clairefontaine Triomphe notebook. (You can use your favorite fountain pen friendly paper, of course. This is just the paper we use. We do like to keep the paper the same for comparison purposes week to week. We place one sheet of the fountain pen friendly paper in the inky box. 6. Now you pull out your syringe (this is a "dull" syringe. You can find them at PenChalet.com, as well as many other places, but remember you don't need one with a sharp tip). 7. We open up the featured ink of the week (in this video, we're featuring Sailor Manyo Haha fountain pen ink) and insert the syringe directly into the bottle. Once the syringe is inserted, you pull the stopper back on the syringe to pull some ink in (you don't need much - check the video - we made sure to give you a quick look at the small amount of ink you want to aim for when you're filling the syringe). 8. Close your ink. (We're making "controlled" ink messes here, people. Always close your bottle of ink). 9. Then you aim the syringe at the paper where you'd like the ink splat to occur and squirt the ink out with a sharp movement. We usually put our hands inside the box to get closer to the paper and hold the syringe at an approximate 50-60 degree angle. You can mess with the angle you hold the syringe at, how close you hold it to the paper, etc. to get the exact look you prefer. 10. Repeat the process as many times as you'd like until you feel the ink mess/art is complete! 11. You can leave the paper right where it is to dry, OR you can pick it up and assist the ink in creating intriguing shapes and variations by blowing on pooled areas so the ink crawls across the page. 12. Once the ink is completely dry, you can assess the final results. This is a great way to look for potential shading and sheening traits. 13. We also like create a color swatch of the ink while we have the ink and the inky box out each week and use that to give another look at the ink and how it performs in different scenarios. The color swatch card we used this week was pulled from the original Col-o-ring ink testing deck. For more info on Sailor Manyo inks: https://www.penchalet.com/ink_refills...
