The Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative (SJI), an NGO based in Samdrup Jongkhar, aims to build a resilient farming community involving out-of-school youth, with a good network of committed lead farmers to achieve seed self-reliance. It also aims to promote local seeds, local breed of crops vanishing from the villages. Farmer Tshering Gyelpo from Bangtsho, Dewathang, is the caretaker at the him one of the Seed Keepers of Seed Bank. Farmer Karma from Rikhay Village in Dewathang had earlier visited the Seed Bank to collect his share of seeds. After few months of hard work, traditional cereal crops like foxtail millet, sweet buckwheat, and mustard found its way back to the fields of farmers like Karma. Ata Daza and Farmer Karma are one of the many Lead Farmers from Rikhay village to help revive and preserve traditional cereal crops which are at the verge of disappearance. Our producer Sonam Dema visited the Seed Bank earlier this year and interviewed the seed keepers in Dewathang to share their stories.
