Hirschsprung’s disease, also known as congenital aganglionic megacolon, is a condition that affects the large intestine (colon). It occurs due to missing nerve cells in the muscles of the baby’s colon, which leads to problems with passing stool. Let’s delve into the details: Symptoms: Newborns: The most obvious sign is that a newborn fails to have a bowel movement within 48 hours after birth. Other signs may include: Swollen belly Vomiting (including green or brown substance) Constipation or gas Delayed passage of meconium (the newborn’s first bowel movement) Older children: Swollen belly Chronic constipation Gas Failure to thrive (poor growth and development) Causes: The exact cause of Hirschsprung’s disease is not clear, but it may be associated with genetic mutations. Nerve cells in the colon fail to form completely, affecting muscle contractions that move food through the bowels. Risk Factors: Having a sibling with Hirschsprung’s disease increases the risk. Being male is associated with a higher likelihood. Other inherited conditions, such as Down syndrome or congenital heart disease, may also play a role. Complications: Children with Hirschsprung’s disease are prone to a serious intestinal infection called enterocolitis. Treatment: Surgical intervention is the primary treatment. Options include: Pull-through procedure: Removing a part of the colon and connecting the healthy part to the anus. Bowel resection with colostomy: Attaching an external pouch to collect feces. Serial rectal irrigation: Helps relieve pressure in the bowel. #Hirschsprung
