Elisia and Betsy Hopkins share the struggles and ultimate triumphs in their journey to start their family. As a loving lesbian couple, they sought care from several infertility centers who refused to care for them citing their sexual orientation and unmarried social status as reasons to deny them care. They learned about our Michigan Reproductive Medicine welcoming philosophy embracing family building for all women and men irrespective of sexual orientation. We embrace all loving couples in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members of our community who wish to start and grow their families. Treatments including therapeutic donor sperm insemination and donor egg IVF with gestational carrier are provided at our center. Elisia and Betsy originally planned to use Betsy's eggs, undergo in vitro fertilization with donor sperm and place up to 2 embryos into Elisia's womb in an effort to most equally share in the birth of their child. After multiple attempts not resulting in a successful pregnancy, they decided to change their strategy by harvesting eggs from both partners. Using the same sperm donor to inseminate both of their eggs and transfer one embryo whose egg origin was from each into Elisia's womb was the plan followed. This is called "Reciprocal IVF". This time it worked with twins Gabriel and Trace being born! Now they have two children and they are both Moms in the truest sense. How exciting is that? It's not enough to talk about personalized care, it's essential to show it every day. Finding the right path for women and men to start their families is why we do what we do. This is our mission and commitment to each and every person for whom we have the privilege to provide care.
