People are intentionally not mowing their lawns around Northeast Wisconsin...They're waiting until June in a practice called "No Mow May."🤨😲 Why? The idea is that many small grasses, clovers, flowers, etc. sprout flowers in early spring to offer food to the hundreds of native pollinators in our environment, thus protecting pollinators.🐝🦋🐌 Pollinator: Usually insect species and birds that feed on plant pollen, and help plants to pollinate (reproduce) which creates seeds and fruits, and increases biodiversity.🌳🌼🌸 By allowing these small flowers to bloom you're massively increasing the food supply and surface area for pollinators to thrive.🤯 Side Benefit: By increasing the bees, butterflies, and other pollinators you're increasing the food supply for local birds, fish, and some small mammals.🐟🐦 How did this come to be? Last year, the No Mow May initiative started in Appleton. Now it has spread to about 10 communities across Northeast Wisconsin. You can learn more by watching the video. The Downside The downside to No Mow May is something that needs serious attention. As not everyone is excited about the movement. Downsides include: Judgement from peers. A less than perfect lawn. Possible inconvenience of living amongst animals that aren't humans or domesticated cats and dogs. Increase in ant populations. Which could impact homes or struggling trees. How to get involved?
