China is the strongest political and military ally of military-ruled Myanmar. On Monday afternoon Khin was welcomed by his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao in Beijing. After one hour of formal talks, the two prime ministers attended a ceremony in which the two countries signed a series of agreements and memorandums regarding the economic and technological cooperation, especially in telecommunication and mining industries, the reframing of the debts of Myanmar to China and Chinese investments of certain industrial projects in Myanmar. It is Khin's first visit to China since becoming prime minister last year. He was last in China when he went along with the chairman of the ruling military junta, Senior General Than Shwe, in January 2003. After Beijing, Khin is scheduled to visit Shanghai, the biggest city of China, and Guangzhou during his trip to study economic development while strengthening bilateral relations. He is accompanied on this visit by his wife and the ministers of energy, electric power, industry one, industry two, commerce, communication and agriculture. China is Myanmar's most important ally, giving it financial assistance denied by Western nations who shun the junta for failing to hand over power to a democratically elected government. Myanmar also gets substantial defence assistance from China in addition to diplomatic support in international forums. The volume of trade between Myanmar and China in 2003 was 1.07 (b) billion US dollars, up 25 percent from the year before, with the balance of trade in China's favour. The two countries China shares a 2,800-kilometre (1,400-mile) border.
