Walking the audience through the story of why she gave up on the dream of becoming a ballerina, Isabel Martins shares her experience with eating disorders in the ballet industry. Growing up as a pre-professional ballet dancer and spending the majority of my childhood inside a dance studio, it was my ultimate goal to achieve a bodytype that was applauded by the dance industry. Now, in retrospect, I realize the ballet industry imposes an unattainable standard on young boys and girls to conform to a specific bodytype, leading to many of them developing eating disorders. In my talk, I will share my experience having developed one of these disorders and share my views on what I believe to be the root of the issue and what should be done to prevent the widespread of these disorders in the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
