Single Ventricle heart defects are most often fatal without early intervention and typically require open-heart surgery, performed as a series of two or three reconstructive operations known as "Staged Reconstruction." The first-stage operation is called the Norwood procedure and is performed in babies who have obstruction of blood flow to the body. For infants with single ventricle who have unrestricted blood flow to the lungs and no obstruction to the body, they are managed by placing a band around the pulmonary artery to restrict blood flow to the lungs. These infants don't need the Norwood procedure, but they still need the second and third reconstructive operations.
