Austria-Hungary is often portrayed as the Central Powers’ “soft underbelly” in the First World War, an empire unable to defend itself and perpetually dependent on Germany for survival. This reputation has led many to dismiss the Habsburg monarchy as essentially “useless” during the conflict. The YouTuber Henry Stewart History produced a video reinforcing this view, a video I will be covering and responding to in this response. Was Austria-Hungary truly doomed by sheer incompetence, or were deeper factors and overlooked military nuances at play? That is the question I will explore today.
