In part one, I focused on Diesel Freight Sets. In this segment I will show a good sample of the Steam Freight Sets. There were no 7" passenger sets. The Marx 7" line of trains was inexpensive type brought out to compete against Unique Arts entry into toy trains. Unique Art went out of business within a couple of years of entering the train business so Marx had no incentive to improve the line. Nice and colorful pieces but the lack of variations has left them ignored by collectors. What you will see here are boxed sets, no extra cars so they are pretty short lash ups with the exception of the B&O which I made up of a PlastiMarx tender and extra cars. B&O came as a diesel set, but not steam. There were no flatcars, reefers, hoppers, tank cars etc. Just engines, tenders, boxcars, gondolas and cabooses. The gondolas only came in two names, the yellow Wabash and the brown C&O. Boxcars came in red PRR Merchandise service or red white and blue State of Main. Loco, tender caboose road names were limited to KCS, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, B&O, Nickel Plate and NYC. The only major collectable in the 7 inch series was a Disney wind up set. A poor seller when new makes it hard to find and now very desireable. (more)
