The microclimate, the climate in local patchers, varies enormously. Temperatures are higher in patches that face the sun, are dry, dark, free of vegetation and little wind. There is similar variation in moisture, wind and light. The microclimate important for 5 reasons. 1. Many species are fussy where they occur- for example some species of interest seek south facing warm slopes. 2. The diversity in microclimate means a site can support a range of species - those who require warm conditions and those that avoid them. 3. Many species adjust their behaviour - sometimes basking in the heat and sometimes seeking shade. 4. This diversity can provide resilience to weather variation between years. 5. A related issue, diversity in microclimates can provide some resilience to climate change, for example, some butterflies who selected warm south facing short vegetation are shifting to patches with longer vegetation or less exposed to the sun.
