It arrived in what is now known as Ho Chi Minh City, signaling a new era of relations between the former foes. VOICE-OVER: 0002 The last time an American naval ship docked at Ho Chi Minh City, it was still known as Saigon - and the Vietnam war was still raging. This time, the American navy was coming in peace, hoping to usher in a new era of cooperation. 0016 No longer arch enemies, the talk now is of growing friendship. Vietnam's also being courted as an ally in the war on terror. 0025 SOUNDBITE (English) Commander Richard A. Rogers, Commander of USS Vandegrift: "The US Navy shares a lot of the same interests as other South-Eastern Asian countries, specifically Vietnam, with respect to counter-terrorism and economic growth. So ship visits, such as the Vandegrift is doing right now, are a big player in ensuring that the US Government objective is met." 0042 Diplomatic ties with Vietnam were only re-established in 1995. Since then, relations have been steadily warming. Memories of the war continue to loom large for generations of Vietnamese. Yet many have welcomed Wednesday's visit. 0057 SOUNDBITE (Vietnamese) Duong Trung Quoc, historian and Member of Vietnamese Parliament: "This visit is significant because it's the first time in Vietnamese history that a U-S warship has come to Vietnam with a peaceful flag and friendly spirit. It's the result of the development and normalisation of ties between the two countries." 0119 So far, Vietnam appears willing to eventually provide the U-S with access to its ports. But the Pentagon has ruled out re-establishing a permanent military presence in Vietnam. 0131 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
