Replacing Glow Plugs on a Nissan Qashqai: A Step-by-Step Guide Owning a diesel car often means dealing with glow plug issues at some point. They're crucial for starting your engine, especially in colder weather. In this post, I'll walk you through the process of diagnosing and replacing glow plugs on a Nissan Qashqai. Whether you're a DIY enthusiast or just curious about the process, this guide breaks it all down. ---------------------------------------- Diagnosing the Problem Before jumping straight into replacing parts, it's always a good idea to confirm the issue with diagnostic tools. For this Qashqai, the initial complaint was a fault light on the dashboard, which had been checked elsewhere. The customer had been told it was likely a glow plug issue. To make sure this was accurate, I ran a fault code scan using the Launch Euro Tab III diagnostic tool. The scan brought up fault code P0380-96, which points to the glow plugs. Since all signs pointed to the glow plugs being the culprits, we proceeded with the replacement process. It's worth noting that a diagnostic scan and clearing codes aren't the same as a full diagnostic test. While scans help identify fault codes, proper diagnostics dig deeper into the reasons behind those issues. ---------------------------------------- Prepping for the Job It's important to keep the engine warm for as long as possible while working on the car. A warm engine can make it easier to remove certain components, especially glow plugs. However, for this job, some pipes and parts needed disconnecting, which required turning the engine off before proceeding. Here’s what we did next: 1. Disconnect Components: Tools like clip removal tools and various ratchets make it easier to disconnect pipes, bolts, and covers. For this job, I removed a few 10mm bolts and some clips to get access to the engine. 2. Engine Cover and Wires: Once the pipes and bolts were removed, the engine cover came off. This gave us a clear view of the glow plugs. The glow plug connections were disconnected carefully using 90° pliers. ---------------------------------------- Removing the Old Glow Plugs Glow plugs are small but can be tricky to remove. Here’s how it went: Using a ratchet, I removed each of the four glow plugs, one by one. Some angles were slightly awkward due to the position of the fuel lines. A proper glow plug removal tool with a magnetic head is incredibly helpful, but when one isn’t available, you can manage with basic pliers and a steady hand. If the old glow plugs show signs of corrosion, it’s a good idea to clean out the port before fitting new ones. However, these plugs didn’t show significant wear, so cleaning wasn’t necessary. ---------------------------------------- Installing the New Glow Plugs When fitting replacement glow plugs, precision is key: 1. No Grease: While some people choose to grease the threads, I avoid it. Diesel engines like this Qashqai don’t usually have issues with glow plugs seizing. 2. Handling with Care: Each new glow plug was carefully lowered into its port. With the correct tools, like a removal set with a magnetic attachment, this process can be even smoother. Once aligned, each plug was tightened with a ratchet, ensuring they were snug but not overtightened (about 6-9Nm). 3. Reconnecting Components: Once the glow plugs were securely in place, I reattached the connections, engine cover, and any removed pipes or bolts. Double-checking each step made sure everything was back where it needed to be. ---------------------------------------- Clearing the Fault Codes Once the job was done, I cleared the fault codes using the diagnostic tool. While this Qashqai wasn't originally in for diagnostics, clearing codes is part of the job when working with glow plugs. Even if the customer requested only a glow plug replacement, it's good practice to check and remove any logged errors. ---------------------------------------- A Note on Diagnostics and DPFs This job highlights the difference between basic scans and full diagnostics. Just reading and clearing codes doesn’t solve underlying issues. For example, with diesel particulate filters (DPFs), people often request a simple clean. However, a blocked DPF usually points to other problems, like short journeys or idling the car for extended periods. Without addressing the root cause, the problem often resurfaces. Glow plugs, on the other hand, are more straightforward. If they’re dead, replacing them generally fixes the issue—though you should confirm as much through proper testing. Wrapping It Up After installing the new glow plugs and clearing the codes, the Nissan Qashqai was good to go. It was a satisfying job, and the engine started smoothly with no warning lights. Remember, regular diagnostics and maintenance can extend the life of your car and save you from bigger problems down the line. See you in the next one!
