O'Brien & Ickes lead 'Bows to series clincher over Ball State

The University of Hawai‘i baseball team closed out a strong weekend at Les Murakami Stadium on Sunday, clinching a four-game series victory over Ball State with its third win in four games. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 8-4 overall, using timely hitting and steady pitching to build momentum heading into the start of Big West Conference play. Liam O’Brien said the key was staying composed throughout the weekend. “The mindset was just stay calm, just worry about what I can,” O’Brien said. “I was really just trying to stay focused, each page, page by page. That’s really it. That’s all I was focused on. It went quick, but that’s it.” Offensively, Hawai‘i found production throughout the lineup, highlighted by a rare home run to left field from Elijah Ickes — no small feat at Les Murakami Stadium, where the prevailing winds often knock balls down in that direction. “Like you said, it’s pretty rare this year to the left field,” Ickes said. “The wind was right in the first inning and the first few innings. I saw the flags — they weren’t anything crazy. So, yeah, it felt good.” Ickes said the balanced offensive effort could pay dividends as the team transitions into conference play. “It’s huge just to get the bats hot going into the Big West and hopefully we can keep things rolling,” he said. “The whole lineup seemed pretty comfortable today. Everyone’s producing.
