Bibione Spiaggia | Beach Walking Tour 🏖 5K Beach Walk ☀️ Italy September 2021 The territory of Bibione, even before the appearance of man, was formed thanks to the components of the salt water of the Adriatic and the fresh water of the Tagliamento river. It was characterized by a large expanse of forest that covered the whole area from the mountains to the sea. During the first period of the tertiary era, the waters of the Adriatic sea reached almost as far as the Alps, forming a large gulf. With the climatic changes, the sea level began to regress to rise again during the interglacial periods. Man began to live on these initially homeless lands, trying to survive by hunting and fishing; but from the end of the fifth millennium BC began to practice agriculture, thus forming the first villages. Thus came the Venetians, a people of poorly defined origins. The settlements on the lagoon of today's Bibione stemmed from the need to find isolated and peaceful places where defenseless people could live undisturbed. The Venetians delimited not only a territory but also the Venetian language, of Etruscan alphabetical derivation spoken only in this area. On the border with this area there were meat, people of Celtic origin from central Europe who over time mingled in the lands of the Venetians, between the Livenza and Timavo rivers. We can consider the Celtic settlement in the pre-Roman era to be a certain fact, even if the times and methods are not well known. Romanization and the origins of the name Although various hypotheses have been formulated on pre-Roman origins, Bibione was certainly inhabited in the imperial period of Rome. In 186 BC there was an invasion of the transalpine Gauls and they settled in the countryside of Aquileia. Pliny the Elder said that it was one of the many peaceful immigrations but the Romans saw it as an act of aggression and organized a military expedition led by the consul M. Claudio Marcello and defeated the new arrivals. From that moment the Romans will never leave these lands and they began to colonize the "Venetiae" up to the territory of the present Friuli. In 181 BC they founded the colony of Aquileia, a strategic point to control the unstable regions of the Istri in the East. The Romans brought civilization, language, culture, forums, aqueducts and built in 148 BC. an adequate road network: the via Postumia that went from Genoa to Aquileia. In 131 BC the via Annia and then the via Aurelia, from Padua to Asolo. The Emperor Augustus divided Italy into eleven regions and the tenth included the "Three Venezie": the "Venetiae et Histria". In this period we can say that Bibione had the greatest growth both as an agglomeration of buildings and as a living vitality. In the area of Bibione Pineda some excavation works were carried out in 1883 and the presence and existence of houses from the Roman era is attested. In 1932 some scholars began new excavations and found other foundations of buildings from the Roman era. It is the first time that, continuing with excavations in the upper Adriatic, traces of Roman houses have been found. Everything was then buried, perhaps due to lack of means, but everything remains hidden under the sand to witness the beginning of civilization in Bibione. We find Bibione written for the first time in a document dated 967 BC. with which Otto I confirms the pact with the Venenti, also naming other places in the form of ablative: “Equilo, Caprulis, Bibionibus, Grado, Capite argelis, ...”. As a toponym, Bibione has taken on its importance in the history of the area and this can be seen in the various historical documents found where the use of this name often occurs. As for the actual origin, we can have confirmation of its Latin or Roman derivation. Some deduce that it derives from “bibbio”, from the Latin pipio or cranes sleeping on one leg; others from "bibio-onis" or gnat of the wine and of the marshes and then of the islands. The last testimony referred to Bibione dates back to 1197 where "Bibons" is mentioned, which Paschini already proposed to identify with "Bibiones".
