There are no fixed textbooks or classrooms in Thrissur’s model pre-schools. Children enrolled in Government Upper-Primary School (GUPS) Varadiyam or GUPS Arimpur learn through role-play, games, activities, song and dance in “learning areas”. A host of Kerala government initiatives taken since 2018 have transformed over 50 pre-primary and primary schools in the district. The government schools adopted activity-based learning, refurbished classrooms to suit it and trained teachers in the new teaching method. The result: a sharp increase in enrolment and attendance.
