A Inspiring Example of Life's Resilience to Keep on Keeping on, Despite the Odds

Every once in a while you stumble across a tree whose resilience to continue to live and thrive just blows your mind, and this one right here left my mind in molten fragments of wonder. This here is a Western Redcedar, Thuja plicata, that despite having fallen over, it continues to thrive, acting as a living nurse log for different species to grow while living its best life despite the hardships the universe has thrown its way. While the original leader of the tree has died, the uppermost formerly lateral branches have reiterated to become new leaders growing straight up from the now horizontal stem of the tree. As most of the cambium has died, decomposition has set in on the upper part of the fallen stem, creating habitat for fungi and bacteria and mosses to form soil that allows for other species like Huckleberry, Salal and even Western Hemlocks to grow upon this tree epiphytically (a plant that lives on another plant). Even after it fell over, the original roots have remained in the ground and thus connected to the mycorrhizal fungi and root network in the soil that continues to provide nutrients and water to the tree, which are fed up through its cambium to the actively photosynthesizing leaves in the reiterated leader dozens of meters away. How friggin’ inspiring is that?! If this tree can keep on thriving despite having fallen over, being decomposed, having other things grown on it and break it down…then you can handle your Monday.
