Joeli Schilling, Flute Christine Teng, Piano Selpulchre by the Sea was written for Joeli Schilling in the summer of 2022. The piece is loosely based on Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe and La Dispute’s Fall Down, Never Get Back Up Again. Sepulchre by the Sea was composed to showcase Joeli’s artistry, their friendship, and as an encapsulation of this time in their lives- a season of personal discoveries and musical growth after our four years together at Texas Tech University on a backdrop of political and social upheaval. The fifth movement dissolves into an enchanting but ominous melody, referencing the traditional hymn, "The Lord Bless You and Keep You", Schilling and Perry’s favorite hymn from their days singing together in the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Lubbock, TX. This piece is a beautiful representation of Joeli and Austin's friendship and an artistic expression of fear, longing, love, and anger.
