A Peruvian court is set to deliver its verdict on Tuesday (April 15) in the corruption case against former President Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia, who stand accused of accepting illegal funds from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to finance Humala's 2011 presidential campaign. Prosecutors have requested a 20-year prison sentence for Humala and an even harsher 26.5-year sentence for Heredia, who led Humala's nationalist party during his rise to power. Humala, 62, rose to prominence through a military career that included counterinsurgency operations against the Shining Path guerrilla movement. After leading an unsuccessful coup attempt against then-President Alberto Fujimori in 2000, he received a pardon and pivoted to politics. He won Peru's presidency in 2011 after rebranding himself as a moderate leftist, moving away from his earlier, more radical political positions. During his 2011-2016 term, Humala focused on maintaining economic stability and reducing poverty rates, though his administration faced declining popularity and conflicts over mining projects. #formerperuvianpresident #humala #ollantahumala #moneylaundering #perupolitics #perunews #latinamericanpolitics #corruptioncharges #humalatrial #justiceinperu #politicalscandal #perulegalnews Moneycontrol is India’s leading financial portal, offering market news, expert analysis, and powerful tools.
