Episode 43 of Piping Up with Stephen Regec In this video, we feature the magnificent Austin Organ, Opus 2795 (2013), at First Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Built by Austin Organs, this remarkable instrument is a grand hybrid design consisting of 118 ranks and 6,158 pipes. While the organ is primarily pipework, it also incorporates digital resources by Walker Technical Company, creating a seamless blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The result is a powerful and versatile instrument capable of leading worship with authority while offering the tonal color and dynamic range of a concert instrument. The organ is played from an impressive five-manual console constructed of red oak and equipped with a 100-level combination action. The keyboards feature Austin’s distinctive bone-and-walnut design, providing both visual elegance and responsive touch. The Chancel Organ alone contains 83 ranks, contributing significantly to the instrument’s depth and flexibility. Notably, the completed console was featured at the American Guild of Organists National Convention in Nashville in July 2012, prior to the instrument's full installation. The organist for this performance is Sean Burns, who began his tenure at First Baptist Church on June 4, 2023. A Philadelphia-area native, Sean relocated to Washington, DC, in 2021. He earned his Master of Music in Organ Performance from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where he studied with Alan Morrison. Before moving to Washington, he served as principal organist at Corpus Christi Church and later at Abington Presbyterian Church in suburban Philadelphia. In addition to his work in church music, Sean has built an extensive career in opera and vocal coaching. He has worked with students at Westminster Choir College and Rowan University, and professionally at Sarasota Opera House, as well as with the summer programs CoOPERAtive in Princeton and Canto in Louisville. Sean is also a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where he earned his Juris Doctor after relocating to DC. Reflecting on what drew him to First Baptist, he shared that attending an organ recital at the church reminded him how much he loved having a regular place to play each Sunday, and the sheer scope of the instrument inspired him to apply when the position became available. Channel Intro music is brought to you by Walker Technical Organ Company and Daniel Umholtz. For more information about the organ, visit: https://pipeorgandatabase.org/instrum...
