Who should own your body when you die? Should organ donation be mandatory? Nudge: http://amzn.to/2wRGwlu The 1st successful organ transplant took place in 1954 when a man offered his twin brother a kidney. The 1st transplant from a deceased donor occurred 8 years later. In the US: • There are current 117,000 people waiting for an organ • Many of these, as much as 60%, will die while on the list • On average every ten minutes, someone is added to the waiting list • On average, 22 people die each day while waiting for a transplant. • A single organ donor can save eight lives • However only 3 in 1000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation • And while 95% of US adults support organ donation only 54% are donors • The waiting list has continued to grow each year at a rate that exceeds donation If we could fix this problem millions of lives could be saved. There are 5 approaches to the way organs are donated: (1) Explicit Consent (2) Bartering system or Organ Market (3) Routine Removal (4) Presumed Consent (5) Mandated Choice I propose that Presumed Consent should be adopted globally.
