Snow, strong winds, and the remains of old lead mines beneath our feet ❄️⛏️In this short winter walk, we leave the forest trails behind and explore the hills near Bryn Alyn, where old mine shafts and adits still mark the landscape. This video is a follow-up to our previous walk in Nercwys Forest. After finishing the red route, we decided to wander the surrounding hills instead of heading straight for the summit of Bryn Alyn — saving that for another day. What we didn’t expect was how quickly the weather would turn. Wind picked up fast, snow came in sideways, and flying the drone turned into a near emergency landing. With frozen hands and conditions worsening, we made the sensible call to turn back. As we crossed farmland and endless gates on the way home, it was impossible not to think about the history of this place. These hills were once worked for lead and silver, with shafts sunk deep into the limestone. Mining shaped local communities for generations — often at a heavy cost. This isn’t a big summit walk. It’s a winter wander through quiet hills — where landscape, weather, and history all meet. 👉 Part 1: Walking the Red Route in Nercwys Forest (linked below) 🥾 QUICK WALK INFO Area: Bryn Alyn / Nercwys Forest, North Wales Type: Low-level winter walk Route: Red Circuit + Bryn Alyn extension (previous vlog) Time: approx. 3 hours (1–2 hours for Red Route only) Elevation gain: ~270 m Difficulty: Moderate (harder in snow & ice) Surface: Forest tracks, soft earth, mud, icy patches Optional detour: Llyn Ochin (small forest lake) Terrain: Open hills, farmland, old mining ground Conditions: Snow, strong wind Footwear: Hiking boots essential in winter Best for: Walkers, winter hiking, landscape & history lovers Link to All Trails route: https://www.alltrails.com/en-gb/trail...
