(23 May 1999) Albanian/Nat Over 400 Kosovar men crossed over the border from Kosovo into Albania on Sunday, bringing with them tales of abuse and torture inflicted upon them by the Serbs. The men, whose fate and whereabouts has been a mystery for weeks, had been held in a Serb prison where they were reportedly badly beaten and fed infrequently. Most of the men, whom the Serb military feared would join the separatist K-L-A forces, had been plucked from refugee columns and separated from their families. On the other side of no-man's land, on the border between Kosovo and Albania, 456 men wait to escape the war and their Serb oppressors. Most felt that they would never see their families and friends ever again. Emaciated and in varying states of shock, these men brought nothing with them except stories of torture, brutality and hardship. For some the emotion and relief expressed itself in tears. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "We have been beaten and one of my back bones is broken, for three weeks we were in prison, nobody knows where our wives and children are" SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop, Kosovar refugee Poorly fed for weeks, the refugees welcomed the food being handed out by the aid workers. But this border area is considered neither safe nor ideally suited for refugees who will need medical care and food, and so they are moved to Kukes. At this major camp in Albania relatives and friends wait for the buses to arrive. There are emotional scenes for those lucky enough to have found their loved ones. This man has been searching for his nephews and has found only two of them, but he won't give up. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "I have come from Skodra to be reunited with my nephews, there are six of us, we are four out of two, but we will find the others" SUPER CAPTION: Xhevat Sadiko, Kosovar refugee Many of the men have been almost shell-shocked by their ordeal, staring blankly into space. Stories of brutality and human rights abuses abound, and some even show their wounds. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "Five weeks ago we were forced to leave our village, the Serbs shot at us because they wanted to kill us. We tried to escape through Bagjora, but they caught us" SUPER CAPTION: Skandnar Shaalaa, Kosovar refugee These latest arrivals are a small proportion of the vast number of men who have gone missing since the ethnic cleansing process gathered pace at the start of the war nearly two months ago. The wives and children of those men still missing continue to search, in the hope that they will be among the lucky ones to be reunited.
