Mountain Sickness doesn't play favorites. It can strike even the fittest of athletes. Take it slow, and don't ignore the symptoms. In this video, Pete Takeda, Editor of Accidents in North American Climbing, and IFMGA/AMGA guide Jason Antin walk through an accident on Denali in 2023 in which a climber ascended too fast and fatally succumbed to HAPE/HACE when a helicopter was delayed due to poor weather conditions. Takeda and Antin describe symptoms and treatment of acute mountain sickness, and how to prevent it from developing into high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE). The Prescription is the monthly newsletter of Accidents in North American Climbing.
