At the time, the company was the only game in town and could do as it pleased. Domino Sugar would hold a virtual monopoly on sugar production in Puerto Rico for the next century. The company used its position of power to drive down prices, forcing smaller refineries out of business. It also forced workers to accept below-market wages and working conditions. The effects of Domino's monopoly were devastating for Puerto Rico. The country's economy became dependent on the sugar industry, making it vulnerable to price fluctuations. When the Great Depression hit, demand for sugar crashed, and so did the economy of Puerto Rico. In addition to wreaking havoc on the economy, Domino Sugar also polluted the environment with toxic chemicals. Rivers and lakes were filled with pollutants from the company's refineries. This led to widespread health problems among residents of Puerto Rico. Today, Domino Sugar is no longer the only game in town, and the company has been forced to modernize its operations. However, its legacy of destruction remains in Puerto Rico.
