It has a very modern, detailed, sheeny, kind of a sound to it. I’m not too fond of the sound, but that’s just a personal preference. It is a large diaphragm condenser mic that requires phantom power. In terms of features, we have three different polar patterns: omni directional, cardioid, or figure eight. These options can be selected with a switch right on the front of the mic. On the back side of the microphone there are options for low cut and a 10db pad. The latter option is good to use when you need to record louder sources. As you can see, the AT4050 has a nice well rounded set of options to help you get the best sound possible. The hallmark of microphones made by Audio Technica is its modern sound. It has a really present, detailed top end. It is a bit more rolled off in the lower spectrum. This great for sources like modern vocals (i.e. pop, r&b, hip hop, rap) and modern rock. Like I said earlier, the Audio Technica AT4050 is not cheap by any means. But if you are creating modern tracks, this microphone is a great option to consider. It is rugged, well built and the AT4050 comes with a shock mount. I’m Alex Scott, an award-winning musician, engineer and producer based in Denver, Colorado.
