What if... Deep Purple were a Glam Rock band? Imagine, if you will, it's 1969 in an alternative universe, not unlike our own. After recording three albums with their 'Mk1' line-up, Deep Purple are at a creative impasse. They have a strong new line-up, with Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass, but have grown weary of the Vanilla Fuge-like heavy psych of their early material, and are unsure what direction to take. Enter the production team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who convince the band that the key to success lies in taming their harder-rocking tendencies, brightening up their image, and adding a bubblegum pop flavour to their sound. The band are skeptical, but Chinn and Champman are very persuasive, and soon Deep Purple find themselves on Top of the Pops, performing their new single, 'Black Night', dressed in shiny satin jumpsuits and draped in feather boas! Their chintzy, flashy style and bouncy catchy music spawn a slew of imitators, and place them at the vanguard of the burgeoning glam-rock scene. However, Deep Purple soon tire of Chinn and Chapman's creative control, and start to rebel, making tougher, harder rocking records, free from bubblegum window-dressing, and closer in style to The Sweet, who in this timeline are a pure hard rock band, considered to be forefathers of heavy metal! Written by Blackmore/Gillan/Glover/Lord/Paice I do not own the rights to the song, Ian's vocals, or any of the clips/images used. Backing track arranged, performed and produced by me, using GarageBand, and whatever instruments I had to hand. NO generative AI used, ever.
