From Jat Regiment to Bangkok glory: Meet Haryana's First Asian Games medalist, Bhim Singh #Sportsgaon Bhim Singh became Haryana’s first Asian Games medalist by clinching gold at the 1966 Asian Games held in Bangkok. Haryana was carved out of Punjab on November 1, 1966, and on December 9, Bhim Singh, a native of Dhanana village in Bhiwani, won the gold medal in high jump, opening India’s medal account in the Asian Games with a gold. Hailing from a humble background, Bhim Singh joined the armed forces like many other youths from the rural landscape of the region—now part of Haryana—to supplement the family’s agricultural income. It was from there that his sporting journey began. Without any prior experience in high jump, Bhim Singh was introduced to the event because of his height and lean frame. From there, he went on to dominate the country’s high jump scene for over a decade. He competed in two Olympics, in 1968 and 1972, won gold in the 1966 Asian Games, and a silver in the 1970 Asian Games. He also rewrote his own national record 7–8 times and was conferred with India’s prestigious sporting honour—the Arjuna Award. Bhim Singh has witnessed the rise of Haryana’s sporting legacy from close quarters. @sportsgaon
