--Story— (Story written by me! Thunder rumbles, shaking you to the core. You’ve always found thunderstorms sort of scary and considering the circumstances you’ve been unwillingly subjected to over the past few days, you can’t help but be on edge. Not to mention you’re literally alone in your lawyer’s apartment, waiting for his return. He hadn’t said much when he’d left after the two of you ate in rather awkward silence, other than he wouldn’t be too long. It had been too long in your books though - what the hell could a blind lawyer be doing out on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen on a night like tonight? The sudden sound of keys hitting the lock of the front door pulls you from your thoughts, followed moments later by the sound of the door shutting. Straining your eyes in the dim darkness, you can barely make out a familiar looking figure, nearing you with surprising ease. Matt Murdock appears completely soaked to the bone, clad in all black, a few cuts and scrapes dotted across his face. Unsure of what to say, you simply watch as he nears you, noticing the slightly pained grin tugging at his lips. He must’ve determined the fact that you’re still up. Chuckling inwardly, you decide to fill the silence with a question that’s been bugging you since Matt had ushered you into his apartment this afternoon. “How in the world did that size of a billboard get put up right across from you?” You muse, once more laughing softly. “I sure hope they didn’t charge you full price.” The man in front of you just chuckles, bundling a fresh pair of clothes in his arms with practiced ease, heading towards the bathroom. “Went up a year ago. Told the co-op, they nearly rioted. Some oversight from the development agreement. Up side is, nobody wanted it and I got a corner apartment at a hell of a discount.” Watching Matt disappear from your view, you settle back into the bed a little further, his presence setting you a bit more at ease. And then, before you know it, the lawyer is back at your side, taking a seat on the edge of the bed, opposite to you. For a moment you wonder if he’s going to say something - he looks as if he might - but as time passes, you quickly realize the silence is growing thicker once more. “Could I ask you a personal question?” You mumble aloud, watching Matt’s entire demeanor shift almost instantly, his head tilting slightly almost as if to show he’s listening. “I haven’t always been blind,” He states with a soft grin, your surprised exhale likely meeting his senses. “I guess you get that question a lot,” You nod glumly, heart aching for the person sitting in front of you. “How’d it happen, if you don’t mind me asking?” “Car accident,” Matt replies, voice faltering a bit. “When I was nine.” Grimacing, you sigh heavily, softly placing a hand on his shoulder, which tenses at the suddenness but quickly loosens up, realizing it’s just you. “I’m sorry,” You mumble, fingers brushing over the shoulder seam of the sweater he wears. “I can’t imagine what it must’ve been like… you don’t remember what it was like… to see, do you?” Sighing heavily, Matt’s shoulders visibly slump upon hearing your question, his lips forming a thin, bittersweet smile. “Uh… Yes, I remember.” He pauses for a moment, no likely caught up in memories from a time before his accident. “You know, I’m supposed to say I don’t miss it - that’s what they teach you in trauma recovery. Define yourself by what you have, value the difference, make no apologies for what you lack… and it’s all true, for the most part…” You watch his expression shift once more, this time becoming filled with a sort of longing you’ve never quite seen before. “Doesn’t change the fact that I would give anything to see the sky one more time…” Compassion so fierce sweeps through you and with a soft, “I’m gonna hug you now,” falling from your lips, you wrap the same man who had been compassionate enough to let you stay with him in an embrace so tight, you’re surprised when he hesitantly hugs back, quickly settling into your arms. And when you both leave the hug behind, you can tell that the conversation you just shared had shaken Matt up a bit - his tear-filled gaze a tell-tale sign of that fact. So, you gently guide him to the empty side of the bed, much to his protest, and soon enough, you find yourself settling in beside a man who no longer seems like such a stranger and instead - a friend. -Info- I own no rights to any sounds used in this video!
