The action takes place after mission 343 guilty spark. You will need to find a group of marines and covenants who were looking for a key to activate the Halo. You will also need to protect the base. In the next mission, the player needs to find marines who are guarding the portal. You join them. You successfully defend the portal, a marine and a flood emerge from it, but the portal explodes due to overloading.
