The balance scale shortcut is a fast way to solve many weighted average and mixture problems on the GMAT without setting up equations. Think of a weighted average like a balance scale: larger quantities pull the average closer to their value. Because of this relationship, the ratio of the quantities equals the inverse (flipped) ratio of the distances from the average. Recognizing this relationship can save significant time on GMAT Quant and Data Insights problems involving weighted averages and mixtures.
