The Annals of Aman, §134 (Morgoth's Ring, p. 112) And death they will give, death they will receive, and gems that hold the first light of Arda in all its magnificence will be bound to desire and doom. Because the One Ring was made to be wanted through magic and darkness, but the Silmarils were simply too magnificent not to be desired. Enough gorgeus to make anyone give everything to possess them.
