Patients who undergo cardiac arrest have a poor prognosis because of poor perfusion of their vital organs. The most devastating complication of cardiac arrest and the poor perfusion sate is neurological injury. Therapeutic induced hypothermia is utilized in intensive care unit (ICU) settings to reduce the risk of end organ and neurological injury after a patient undergoes cardiac arrest.
