This song was written as a way of honoring all who have served in the military all over the world. The events are taken from actual letters home and conversations with members of the armed forces. Though the final verse is more specific to operations in Kandahar, the sentiment of the song is that troops on all sides sacrifice their physical health, their mental health, the chance to watch their children grow up and many their lives. It is so far beyond the experience of being a civilian but hopefully this song can be helpful to the listener in understanding just as the lletters and conversations were to me. If you enjoy this song and it resonates with you I would invite you to share it. The more veterans that know they are not forgotten and that their sacrifice is appreciated, the better. You can download it from iTunes here http://hyperurl.co/soldiersong and any money from the downloads will be going to http://travismillsfoundation.org. You can also donate at the website it is a great charity for veterans run by veterans. Thankyou to Unite Community Church in Michigan particularly Tracie Pasik for filming and editing, Chad Dohring for mastering and Tim at the loft studios in Saline for recording. Soldier Song (Music/Lyrics Josh Doyle) I went back to the sandbox Because I felt like a liar Selling life insurance With my friends under heavy fire I had to fight Fighting for these brothers at my side Doing what my heart tell me is right Been losing track of days Been moving at a million miles an hour Missile hit the base while I was singing in the shower Mom if I die just know that this is what I was born to do You can take that truth away with you As another fallen soldier Is cut down in his prime He went in knowing the cost That he could be gone before his time Makes me think how I could be a better man Blessed is the soldier for doing what he can Just the other day I got the box you all sent out to me It would blow your mind If you knew how much it meant to me When I’m all alone Just to hear a voice over the phone ‘Cause it can be disheartening Thinking no one really cares That everyone forgets us Trying to get their clicks and likes and shares I say I’m fine But we’re putting our futures on the line And it don’t make much sense some of the time As a another fallen soldier Is cut down in his prime He went in knowing the cost that he could be gone before his time And he only knew his children From voices on the phone Blessed is the soldier who finds his way back home Blessed is the soldier who finds his way back home In an armored car in Kandahar We hit an IED It ripped to shreds one of my friends We were talking about old TV And there goes our happy ending There goes our 4th July If I get back after this tour I know that I will do one more As another fallen soldier Is cut down in his prime He went in knowing the cost That he could be gone before his time And gave up his own freedom So I could have mine Blessed is the soldier that still knows how to cry Blessed is the soldier that still knows how to cry
