Mandarin Chinese, the current dominant language, is difficult for her to speak, as she did not receive an education in the language. When she was a child, the Japanese administered the island and provided schools for the locals. The fact that she cannot speak Mandarin well means that it has been difficult for her to fit into mainstream society. Worldwide, indigenous people face enormous hardships and pressures by societies of colonial powers to give up the traditional language and culture.
