"To A Wild Rose" was written by Edward MacDowell in 1896. It is the first piece from Ten Woodland Sketches, Op. 5. This piece has a simple beauty. It's one rose, not a bouquet. MacDowell writes as an expression mark "with simple tenderness." It opens with rising two-note motifs followed by a longer, arching, two-bar motif. He repeats this rhythmic pattern many times throughout the piece. The most beautiful part comes at the B section which features, as a contrast to the opening, one descending four-bar phrase followed by an ascending line that gets softer and slower. (00 :56) It's like a rose's beautiful fragrance wafting gently up to your nose. The second half repeats the opening section with some variation and with a gentle surprise at the end. Instead of a standard dominant-tonic cadence MacDowell uses a II 6/5 chord that melts into the final beautiful tonic chord. If you value classical music, please subscribe to our channel.
