Bethlehem Reborn, Le meraviglie della Natività - The Wonders of the Nativity Un viaggio emozionante tra arte, fede e speranza: in occasione del Giubileo 2025, i musei del complesso monumentale di San Salvatore in Lauro ospitano la tappa romana di una mostra itinerante multimediale che racconta un luogo simbolo dell’umanità attraverso le voci dei pellegrini, i restauri e i ritrovamenti archeologici. La Basilica della Natività di Betlemme, sorta sul luogo in cui la tradizione ha da sempre collocato la nascita di Gesù e oggi Patrimonio Mondiale UNESCO, è tornata a risplendere dopo secoli di abbandono e degrado grazie a un complesso intervento di restauro durato circa 10 anni. La mostra, curata da Alessandro Fichera, Taisir Hasbun e Tommaso Santi e promossa dall’Ambasciata dello Stato di Palestina presso la Santa Sede, rappresenta un’opportunità unica per camminare attraverso la sua storia, ammirandone i mosaici, le colonne e i legni intarsiati che attraverso i secoli hanno reso questo posto un vero tesoro di civilizzazione. La mostra è articolata in cinque sezioni che si sviluppano in senso cronologico. Testi, immagini e video ci conducono dalla semplice grotta venerata dai primi cristiani e dalla basilica costantiniana al superbo edificio fatto ricostruire verso la fine del VI secolo dall’imperatore Giustiniano, poi fortificato e decorato dai cavalieri del Regno Crociato di Gerusalemme. Dopo il racconto della lunga fase di declino iniziata dal XIV secolo, arriviamo ai nostri giorni, con il progetto di restauro iniziato nel 2013 con i fondi stanziati dal Governo Palestinese con il supporto della comunità internazionale, armonizzando le istanze dei tre ordini religiosi che gestiscono il luogo santo, i greci ortodossi, i cattolici francescani e la chiesa armena. For the 2025 Jubilee, the museums of the monumental complex of San Salvatore in Lauro are hosting the Roman leg of a multimedia touring exhibition that recounts a place symbolic of humanity through the voices of pilgrims, restorations and archaeological finds. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built on the site traditionally believed to be the birthplace of Jesus. A complex restoration project lasting around 10 years has brought the church back to its former glory after centuries of neglect and deterioration. The exhibition, curated by Alessandro Fichera, Taisir Hasbun and Tommaso Santi and promoted by the Embassy of the State of Palestine to the Holy See, offers a unique opportunity to walk through the church’s history, admiring the mosaics, columns and crafted woods that through the centuries made this place a real treasure of civilization. The exhibition is divided into five sections that follow a chronological order. Texts, images and videos take us from the simple grotto venerated by the early Christians and the Constantinian-era basilica to the superb building that was erected at the end of the sixth century by Emperor Justinian, which later on was fortified and decorated by the knights who founded the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem. After showing the long period of decline that began in the 14th century, the exhibits extend to the present day, with the restoration project started in 2013 and funded by the Palestinian Government with the support of the international community, harmonizing the requests of the three religious congregations that manages the church, the Greek Orthodox, the Franciscan and the Armenian.
