Baltimore is dipping into the city budget to help support workers and residents with food, child care and rent amid the continuing federal government shutdown, Mayor Brandon Scott announced Tuesday. The mayor said the city is making $4.6 million available as Americans are set to potentially lose Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to a lack of funding. The USDA said debit cards used by SNAP beneficiaries to buy groceries will not be reloaded as of Nov. 1. Funding for a group of Head Start preschool programs is set to run out Saturday.
