On a recent design adventure through Ferroni in Italy, Artedomus team members from Australia learned about the story of terracotta from one of the company’s most valued Italian collaborators – Cotto Manetti. Led by managing director of Artedomus Phil Brenton, the team were fortunate enough to visit the family-run company Cotto Manetti and immerse in the story of terracotta. Cotto Manetti terracotta tiles have been renowned for their durability and variety of colours for centuries, from burnt orange, bronze naturale, terre colorate and tobacco. The Italian company has worked with Artedomus for over 12 years, producing terracotta in strict compliance with the ancient traditions of Impruneta. The story of terracotta and the Manetti family begins eight generations ago in Ferrone, Italy. Federico Manetti manages the production of Cotto Manetti alongside his father, sister and other artisans. “As a family, we have been selling tiles since 1780, and have also been making wines since 1968,” notes Federico. It was Ferdinando Manetti who began manufacturing terracotta in Chianti and the Impruneta region near Florence in 1780. From there, the family continued expanding their production, with knowledge passed down through the generations. The story of terracotta in Impruneta is especially unique as it produces Galestro clay, which is a mix of clay and calcium carbonate that is rich in iron and extremely malleable, dense and durable. Cotto Manetti terracotta has been made the same way for hundreds of years; the clay from this region creates beautiful colours and textures. “The beautiful thing about Manetti tiles is that when we say they are handmade, we really mean it,” notes Brenton. “They take the clay directly out of the quarry and bring it here [to the factory] where it’s coloured with additives if needed.” Another significant learning about the story of terracotta during the trip was seeing the work, craftsmanship and value of the artisans. “Our artisans are part of the heritage at Manetti. They have deep knowledge and experience, and so any time we want to develop something new, the first thing we do is talk to them,” notes Federico. Some artisans working at Cotto Manetti have been working in their craft for an impressive 45 years. The Cotto Manetti product is not only valued in Australia but is on show everywhere in Tuscany. For example, Antinori Winery features Manetti terracotta across external and internal cladding, such as inside the wine cellars. “The thermal qualities of terracotta are incredible and help regulate the temperature to make fantastic wine,” says Brenton. The collaboration between Artedomus and Cotto Manetti reflects a harmonious marrying of traditional and contemporary visions. “In our family, we give huge importance to relationships,” reflects Federico. “The connection between our two companies has grown a lot more than just a supplier and a customer,” adds Brenton. 00:00 - Introduction to Terracotta Artisanship at Cotto Manetti 02:44 - The Unique Terracotta Clay 03:36 - Visiting the Handmade Tile Factory and Process 05:29 - The Artisan Workshop and Craftsmen 07:02 - Creating the New Volumes Collection 08:30 - Using Terracotta for Historic and Modern Projects 09:51 - The Partnership with Artedomus For more from The Local Project: Instagram – / thelocalproject Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – / the-local-project-publication Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/public...
