Queerantine History: The Story of Stormé DeLarverie

Why don't we learn Queer history in school? Here are all the stories that you should know and yet don't! In the first episode of the Betches Sup series ‘Queerantine History’, Bryan is joined by Chris Burns (aka Fat Carrie Bradshaw) to tell the stories of two Black LGBTQ+ activists in history. It is incumbent upon us to educate ourselves about the history of Black and LGBTQ people because the fact of the matter is-- it's not a part of the curriculum in our education system. American history classes might as well be called straight white history. And not only that, it’s written in a way that glorifies them. Christopher Columbus, the Boston tea party, the founding fathers which, more than half of whom, were slave owners. And yes, we learn a bit about Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement, but what about before that? The Tulsa City massacre? The 400 plus years of slavery and the revolts? Erased. Storme DeLarverie was a singer, a circus performer, a guardian, a bodyguard for the Chicago mob, a drag king, and a lesbian activist who may or may not have thrown the first punch at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Storme was born in New Orleans in 1920 to a black mother and a white father. Her mother was a servant in her father's home. While she celebrated her birthday on December 20th, her actual birthday is unknown, because of the circumstances of her birth she never obtained a birth certificate. Growing up in New Orleans as a biracial girl who didn't fit the mold of either race or what it meant to be traditionally "girly" she was bullied heavily until she moved to Chicago at age 18. She sang at clubs and lounges dressed as a woman in the 1940s, she even spent time working security for the mob until she visited Miami and became a Drag King. She eventually ended up in New York and unlike other drag performers, would often wear drag in public life. She would often walk around New York in her suiting, starting something of a trend. Back then, cross-dressing was illegal and you could be arrested for not wearing a certain number of “gender-appropriate” articles of clothing. For example, if a woman wore a pair of pants with a zipper fly she could be arrested! She was one of many who fought the police at Stonewall, and claimed to throw the first punch that really set off everything that night in 1969. After being hit in the head with a billy club, getting handcuffed and dragged into a paddy wagon she screamed "why don't you do something" into the crowd and the rest is history. Her life post-Stonewall was just as interesting, a member of the Stonewall Veterans who made her living working security for iconic New York lesbian bars Cubby Hole and Henrietta Hudson. She would patrol the streets of the west village, with a gun in tow, looking for anyone that was looking to cause harm to her "baby girls," meaning the other lesbians who inhabited the West Village. She lived for decades in the iconic Chelsea Hotel, before later having to move into a nursing home facility with the owners of Henrietta Hudson as her legal guardians. Stormé passed away in 2014 at the age of 93. Want to hear more political news? If you’re wondering WTF is going on in this crazy world we live in, you’re not alone.
