The Kazakh sibizgi, a traditional flute that has become extinct in Kazakhstan, but can still be found in some regions outside, where ethnic Kazakhs reside. Although the tradition has been revived, the original sibizgi in Kazachstan now is mainly replaced by the Bashkir kuray, which is used by current musicians to perform Kazakh melodies. However, the kuray features a different fingering and playing position. Here’s a video fragment of a genuine traditional sibizgi played by Belkhan from the Ili-Kazakh Autonomous region in Xinjiang.What sets sibizgi music apart is its complete absence of virtuosic technicality, which usually shows off the vanity of modern performers. The musician's fingers move with a gentle, unhurried grace. The music flows in a calm and majestic manner. Clearly, this genre embodies a contemplative and narrative essence at its core.
