Numerous handbooks and websites advice parents on how to raise their children best. In this TEDx talk, Pauline Jansen challenges some of the advice that is given on two frequently occurring problems: when children eat too much or when children eat too little. As a psychologist, Dr. Pauline Jansen has led several research studies on children’s eating habits and overweight, with a particular focus on the role of parents at the kitchen table. She is an Associate Professor working at the Erasmus Medical Centre / Erasmus University Rotterdam, where she heads the behavioural research in Generation R, a large cohort study of children growing up in Rotterdam. She discusses in her talk what parents tend to do when children eat too much or too little, which is often inconsistent with the handbooks’ advice. Using evidence from her research group, Pauline convinces parents to not feel guilty about this. Dr. Pauline Jansen is an Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at the Erasmus University / Medical Centre Rotterdam. Her research is focused on eating behaviours in childhood. Using data from population-based birth cohorts like Generation R (www.generationr.nl), she examines the origins, developmental course and consequences of disordered eating and obesity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
